Oklahoma is in the midst of an education crisis. Lack of funding for schools have left teachers and students without the necessary tools to succeed in life. I believe we must provide schools with the necessary resources to help our children grow intellectually, socially, and emotionally to the best of their ability.
I believe teachers are qualified to research and try best practices within their classroom. I do not think politicians or special interests are recognized as being trained to dictate those choices to them. Teachers need to be provided the resources and support to help our children grow intellectually, socially, and emotionally to the best of their ability. Achieving that level of service will require raising revenue and being smart about costs. That is why I strongly support measures to increase revenue, including raising the gross production tax to 7%, restoring a progressive income tax to Oklahoma, and ending the capital gains exemption.
I also support some consolidation of school administration and oppose efforts to privatize public education through vouchers or other similar programs. Professional teachers should get the respect, status, and income applicable to the education they attained and the valued service they provide.
